“Puddles and Protection” - For Logan

Readings 111025

My youngest grandchild loves water.
A puddle after rain? That’s paradise.
An unwatched hose? That’s a fountain of joy.
He doesn’t care if he’s dressed for church or barefoot in the backyard—
If there’s water, he’s in it.

When he was smaller, our biggest fear was that he’d drink it.
Muddy water. Street water. Hose water.
Didn’t matter.
If it shimmered, he wanted it.

He’s four now. We hope he’s outgrown that thirst.
But I wonder—have we?

Jesus warns us:
“Woe to the one who causes a little one to sin.”
Better a millstone. Better the sea.
Be on your guard.

Our words, our tone, our silence—
They shape the puddles our children play in.
Are they clean? Are they safe?
Or do they carry bitterness, pride, or fear?

We’re called to protect the vulnerable.
To love justice.
To think of the Lord in goodness.
To build up—not tear down.

So today, I ask:
What kind of water are we offering?
May our lives be clear streams of mercy,
Not muddy puddles of confusion.

And may every little one—
In our homes, our churches, our care—
Find in us a reflection of Christ.

Prayer: “Streams of Mercy”

Lord Jesus,
You see the joy in every splash,
the wonder in every child’s eyes.
Guard the little ones who play in puddles—
and those who drink from muddy waters,
longing for love, truth, and grace.

Make our lives clean streams of mercy.
Let our words protect, not wound.
Let our hearts reflect Your goodness.
And when we stumble,
teach us to forgive—again and again.

May we be puddles of joy,
not traps of sin.
And may every child find You
in the safety of our love.

Amen.
