“Jesus Is the Greatest”

Readings 092425

One of my favorite moments in Mass is when the children come forward for the Children’s Liturgy.
I sit on the sanctuary steps—on their level—eye to eye, heart to heart.
Most are under seven. Some shy, some bold.
Ten, maybe fifteen, depending on the Sunday.

I tell them what they’ll hear.
Simple words.
Big truths.
I tell them to ask questions—of their parents, their teachers, their priest, even me.

And oh, the questions.
“What did you have for breakfast?”
“Do you have any kids?”
Or the proud declarations:
“I dressed myself this morning.”

This weekend, they all wanted to show me their shoes.
Tiny feet marching toward mystery.
But one little girl, just three years old, paused.
She looked up at me and said,
“You know what? Jesus is the greatest.”

And I thought of Ezra—
Torn cloak, trembling hands,
Too ashamed to lift his face to God.
And I thought of the Twelve—
Sent with nothing but faith,
No sack, no tunic, no food,
Just the power to heal and the call to proclaim.

That little girl preached the Gospel.
No script. No preparation.
Just truth, spoken plainly.
Jesus is the greatest.

And maybe that’s the heart of it.
To kneel in our wretchedness,
To rise in our calling,
To go forth with nothing but love,
And to speak, like a child,
With wonder and conviction:
Jesus is the greatest.

Prayer: “Jesus Is the Greatest”

Lord Jesus,
You call us to kneel in our weakness
and rise in Your strength.
You send us out with nothing but faith.

Teach us to speak as children do—
with wonder, with joy, with bold simplicity.
May we all proclaim the Gospel —

in every village, every classroom, every pew:

 Jesus is the greatest.
Amen.
