Instead of Me Being Angry, Teach Me to Pray

 Readings 100825

How often do we become angry over things we cannot control?

We get angry at others.
We get angry at ourselves.
Sometimes, we even get angry at God.

But anger doesn’t solve anything.
It doesn’t heal.
It doesn’t restore.
It only tightens the grip of pride.

Like Jonah, we are sent—
sent to preach,
to serve,
to love.

And when the mission doesn’t unfold the way we imagined—
when the results don’t match our expectations—
we bristle.
We protest.
We say, “I have reason to be angry.”

But do we?

Is our anger born of righteousness…
or of pride?
Are we seeking God’s glory…
or our own satisfaction, our own recognition?

God’s will may not be the crowd.
It may be the one person you touched.
The quiet moment at a bedside.
The whispered prayer in a hallway.
The lesson that took root in a child’s heart.

I preach from the ambo.
I post online.
I teach. I listen. I bring communion.
I pray.

And I remember the question asked of Jonah—
“Have you reason to be angry?”

So instead of me being angry, .
Lord Jesus, teach me to pray.
Teach me to surrender. Teach me to trust.

Pray as Jesus taught us:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us…
as we forgive.”

So today, let us not be angry because God didn’t do what we thought He should.
Let us pray that His will be done—
and trust that it already is.

Pray with Me

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
