July 2025 - First Friday Reflection - “We All Need the Physician”

Jesus once said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.” At first glance, that sounds obvious. But He’s not just talking about colds or broken bones—He’s talking about our hearts.

If we think we’re fine, that we’ve got it all together, we won’t go looking for help. But the truth is—we’re all a little sick. We carry wounds: pride, selfishness, indifference, judgment. And Jesus, the Divine Physician, is here not to scold us, but to heal us.

He says, “Go and learn the meaning of the words.” That’s not a suggestion—it’s a mission. He’s calling us to understand what mercy really looks like. And we don’t learn that by sitting in comfort or pointing fingers. We learn it by stepping into the mess—our own and the world’s.

We learn it when we:

  • Sit with someone who’s hurting.
  • Forgive someone who doesn’t deserve it.
  • Stand up for someone who’s been pushed down.

That’s where Jesus is. That’s where healing begins.

The Psalmist says, “Blessed are they who observe what is right, who do always what is just.” That’s not about following rules to earn a gold star. It’s about living with integrity, compassion, and courage. It’s about doing what’s right even when it’s hard.

To “do what is just” means:

  • Feeding the hungry.
  • Defending the voiceless.
  • Refusing to ignore injustice.

It means being the hands and feet of Jesus in a world that’s aching for healing.

So today, let’s stop pretending we’re perfectly healthy. Let’s admit we need the Physician. And then—let’s go out and be part of His healing work. Because when we do, we don’t just get better—we help the world get better too.

And that, my friends, is where true blessing begins.
