God Is Alive in You - Homily/Reflection

Readings 051026

 Blessed be God.

Praise be to Jesus Christ forever and ever.
Come, Holy Spirit—fill us with joy,
set our hearts ablaze with Your presence

Every Sunday I begin with those words
because they center us in the truth:
God is here.
God is with us.
God is moving.

And today, on this Mother’s Day,
we pause to honor the women
who have carried us, guided us, prayed for us,
and loved us with a tenderness
that so often mirrors the heart of God.
For every mother, grandmother, godmother,
spiritual mother, and mother‑figure—
may the Spirit strengthen you
and bless you with peace.

Every Sunday I end by saying:
Be good, be holy,
and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ
by the way you live your life.
Love one another and forgive.
Praise be to Jesus Christ forever and ever. Amen.

Today’s readings preach that same message—
one unified truth running through Acts, the Psalm, Peter, and John:
God is not distant.
God is present.
God is active.
God is alive in you.

Most of us think faith “happens”
in church,
in prayer,
in holy spaces.
But friends—God shows up in unexpected places.
God does not wait for perfect conditions.
God does not wait for us to be calm, rested, or ready.
God shows up in the middle of stress,
in the middle of mess,
in the middle of life.

In Acts, Philip goes to Samaria—
a place filled with tension, suspicion, and division.
Not a peaceful moment.
And yet—
joy breaks out.
healing breaks out.
the Spirit breaks open hearts.

Watch for God in the places you least expect.
Watch for God in the places you don’t want to be.
Watch for God in the places that feel heavy.
Because the Spirit is already there.

The psalmist is honest today:
life brings trials,
testing,
pressure.
But the psalmist remembers:
God has been faithful.
God has carried us.
God has not abandoned us.

Our faith is not pretending everything is fine.
Our faith is remembering who God has always been.

Peter tells us to live with such grounded hope
that people notice.
Not by winning arguments.
Not by overpowering anyone.
But by witnessing God’s goodness
with gentleness and reverence—
especially when life is unfair,
especially when we are misunderstood,
especially when we suffer for doing good.

This is how faith becomes credible:
not when it is loud, but when it is steady.
not when it is perfect, but when it is gentle.
not when it wins, but when it loves.

And Jesus promises us:
You don’t have to do this alone.
You don’t have to love alone.
You don’t have to forgive alone.
You don’t have to carry your cross alone.
“I will not leave you orphans.
I will come to you.
The Spirit will be with you and in you.”

The Spirit helps us live faithfully—
not flawlessly.
Love and obedience
are not about perfection—
they are about relationship.

God is not distant.
God is present.
God is active.
God is alive in you.

By the presence of the Holy Spirit:
We live with joy.
We testify with hope.
We love with obedience.
We trust God through suffering.

This is the Christian life.
This is Spirit‑filled life.

So today, and every day:
The Spirit is with you.
The Spirit is in you.
And you are never alone.

Be good, be holy,
and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ
by the way you live your life.
Love one another and forgive.

Blessed be God.
Praise be to Jesus Christ forever and ever.
Come, Holy Spirit—fill us with joy,
set our hearts ablaze with Your presence. Amen.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

stay close to my heart today.

Fill me with Your Spirit of peace and courage.

Guide my steps

toward mercy and compassion.

Strengthen me when the path feels heavy.

Let Your love shine

through all I say and do.

Be my hope,

my shelter,

and my joy.

Amen.
