The Joy That Lasts

Readings 050826

It’s a little funny—

and a little heartbreaking—

that in today’s world,

so many Christians struggle with the very words

Jesus gives us so clearly:
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.”

His words were not,

“Love the people who think like you.”
or, “Love when it’s convenient.”
He says, “Love as I love you.”
And then He raises the bar even higher:
“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Most people today

won’t even go out of their way to help another,

much less lay anything down.

But to be like Christ
These are the constant values

that will lead us to eternal joy

despite a world that keeps changing.

In a world that spins and shifts beneath our feet,
Jesus gives us something steady to hold onto.
He looks at His friends—He looks at us—and says again,
“Love one another as I love you.”

It is not love that is easy.
Not love that waits for agreement.
But love that gives, love that protects,
love that is willing to sacrifice for the good of another.

And then Jesus says something almost unbelievable:
“I call you friends.”
Friends—because He has shared His heart with us.

He chose us.
Appointed us,
and sends us out to bear fruit that lasts—
kindness that lasts, mercy that lasts,
choices that echo into eternity.

Pray and ask for the grace to seek what truly matters—
not the quick joys that fade,
but the deep joy that remains.
The joy that comes from loving as Jesus loves.
The joy that grows when we choose compassion,
forgiveness, courage, and generosity.

In this changing world,
God’s love anchor us

and guides us toward the values
that lead to eternal joy.

Prayer
Lord Jesus,

Teach my heart

to love as You love.
Steady my steps in this world

that keeps changing.
Let compassion rise in me

when it feels inconvenient.
Let courage guide me

when love feels costly.
Help me bear fruit

that lasts into eternity.
Hold me close as Your friend,

chosen and sent.

Amen
