Today we remember St. Benedict,
that quiet master of holy rhythm, who taught
a life rooted in Christ grows best
when prayer and work breathe together.
His rule of life wasn’t meant
to restrain the soul
but to steady it—
like a trellis that helps a vine
rise toward the sun.
A rule is simply
a set of chosen habits,
gentle anchors
that keep us aligned
with what God has already planted
deep within us.
Many hear the word rule
and tense up.
But Benedict understood something tender:
when our days gain shape,
our hearts gain space.
Space to notice God.
Space to respond.
Space to become.
And in that space,
the world begins to shimmer
with holiness.
Suddenly the angels’ cry—
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!
All the earth is filled with His glory!”—
doesn’t feel distant.
It feels like the truth
humming through your kitchen,
your office,
your neighborhood street.
Jesus tells us that it is enough
for the disciple to resemble the Teacher.
Not perfection—
just resemblance.
Just the slow shaping
of a life that leans toward Him.
So do not fear
the discipline it takes to follow Christ.
What He whispers
in the quiet corners of your prayer,
live out in the bright honesty of your work.
Let your habits become a witness.
Let your daily rhythm become a lantern.
For what God speaks
in the hidden places of our ordinary lives
is meant to be carried outward—
because all creation
already sings His glory.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Shape my days with
Your quiet strength.
Teach my heart to breathe prayer
in every task.
Let my work rise like worship.
Steady my steps
with holy purpose and gentle discipline.
Open my eyes to Your glory
woven through the ordinary.
Make my life a small echo
of Your love in the world.
Amen
