My granddaughter Scarlett is six. She’s found softball.
Not T-ball, where the ball waits politely on a stand.
No—there weren’t enough girls her age, so she plays up.
Coach pitch.
Real pitches.
Real swings.
Real running.
And run she does—
With all her might.
With all the joy her six-year-old legs can carry.
She watches the older girls.
She studies their stances.
She mimics their swings.
She hits.
She runs.
She lands on base.
And she’s ready again—eyes fixed, heart pounding, legs twitching with purpose.
When the season ends, she turns to her mom and says,
“When do I start playing soccer?”
No hesitation.
No mourning the end.
Just movement.
Just joy.
Just readiness.
“Softball is awesome,” she says.
And I believe her.
I see in all of this something holy.
Because what I see in Scarlett is not just athleticism—
It’s the Gospel in motion.
It’s the Spirit of God alive in a child who doesn’t yet know she’s preaching.
Saint Paul wrote boldly to remind the Church of its calling:
To be ministers of Christ Jesus.
To offer our lives as acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
He didn’t boast in himself, but in what Christ had accomplished through him—
By word and deed.
By signs and wonders.
By the power of the Spirit of God.
Scarlett doesn’t know the words yet.
But she lives the rhythm.
She runs with all she has.
She watches. She learns.
She steps up when others step back.
She moves from one season to the next—
With joy, not fear.
She is, in her own way, a steward of grace.
And I wonder—what if we, the children of light, ran like that?
What if we watched?
What if we learned?
What if we stepped up and sprinted toward the next season with joy?
What if we, like Scarlett, believed that softball is awesome—
And so is soccer—
And so is the Gospel—
And so is the next thing God is calling us to?
Friends, boast in what pertains to God—
Boast in the power of signs and wonders,
Boast in the power of the Spirit of God.
The Psalmist sings:
“Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds.”
Scarlett sings it with her feet.
And I, her deacon-grandparent, sing it with my heart.
Together, we offer a new song to the Lord.
Amen.
Prayer: “Run With Joy”
Lord God,You call us to run—not with fear, but with joy.
Teach us to watch with wonder,
To learn with humility,
To step up when others step back.
Let our feet preach Your Gospel,
Our hearts beat with Your Spirit,
And our lives sing a new song of grace.
In every season, may we sprint toward You.
Amen.
