When I was in elementary school,
they called it ecology.
It was how the world works
how every living thing is connected.
Now the word is environmentalism.
A movement
Philosophers and scientists describe
as a secular religion, a surrogate faith.
Long before either term existed,
Scripture revealed a deeper truth:
This is God's world.
A world created by Him,
sustained by His love,
and held together by His wisdom.
Nothing stands alone.
The relationships within creation
are delicate and sacred.
What happens today affects tomorrow.
Choices made
Ripple from lives of those
who came before us
and our choices will ripple to those
who will come after us.
Each of us has been intentionally placed
within God's greater design.
Saint Paul reminds us that through Christ
we have been set free.
Free from sin.
Free from fear.
Free from everything
that keeps us from becoming
who God created us to be.
We are no longer slaves to the old life.
We are sons and daughters of God.
Children of grace.
Members of His family.
Jesus points to the signs
right in front of the people.
Nineveh heard Jonah's warning
and changed their lives.
The Queen of the South
traveled great distances
to seek Solomon's wisdom.
Both recognized God's voice
when it was offered to them.
Standing before our generation is
One greater than Jonah.
One greater than Solomon.
Jesus Christ Himself.
The problem was never
that God had failed to speak.
The problem was whether
people were willing to listen.
The same question remains today.
Will we recognize God's voice
in His word,
in our neighbor,
in creation,
and in the events of our daily lives?
Because God desires more than our attention.
He desires our heart.
A heart attentive to His voice.
A heart connected to our neighbor.
A heart grateful for those
who paved the way before us.
A heart concerned for those
who will come after us.
A heart that recognizes all creation
as a gift entrusted to our care.
Children of the living God,
woven together by His love,
living in the freedom of His grace,
and entrusted with the care of His world.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for weaving us
into Your greater story
of love and grace.
Give us hearts that listen
when You speak
and respond when You call.
Help us love our neighbors,
care for Your creation,
and walk in the freedom found in Christ.
May our lives reflect
that we are Your beloved children
Amen.
