The Holy Spirit Knows What to Say

Readings 101726

Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch

When I'm facilitating

a Spiritual Direction session,

I always hope I'm picking up on the right clues.

I pray I'm asking the right questions.

I pray I'm truly listening,

not only to the person before me,

but also to the Holy Spirit

speaking quietly within my heart.

What I've discovered over time is

the most meaningful moments

rarely come from something

I planned to say.

A question surfaces.

An insight emerges.

A gentle truth finds its way

into the conversation.

And afterward, I realize

the Holy Spirit was already at work.

I think that's what Jesus teaches

in today's Gospel.

He knows we worry

about having the right words.

We worry about saying

the wrong thing.

Yet Jesus tells His disciples,

"Do not worry."

When the moment comes,

Notice what Jesus does not promise.

He does not promise an easy path.

He promises His presence

in the middle of life's challenges.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch trusted that promise.

Even in the face of persecution and death,

he remained faithful because his confidence

rested not in himself, but in Christ.

Saint Paul prays that the eyes of our hearts

may be enlightened.

When we truly see who Jesus is,

fear begins to loosen its grip,

and faith begins to take its place.

Most of us will never stand before kings or courts.

But every day gives us opportunities

to witness to Christ through our words,

our kindness,

and our courage.

So when your moment comes,

don't be afraid.

Listen. Trust.

The Holy Spirit is already there,

and He knows exactly what needs to be said.

Prayer

Lord,

Quiet my fears and open my heart

to Your voice.
Help me listen well, trust deeply,

and speak with grace.
When my moment comes,

let Your Spirit lead my words.

May my life reflect Christ

through faith, kindness, and courage.

Amen.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch, pray for us.
