Jacob’s words echo across the centuries.
“The scepter shall never depart from Judah.”
A lion’s whelp. A promise spoken into a family far from perfect.
Matthew picks up that thread.
A genealogy of saints and sinners. Kings and exiles. Outsiders and the faithful.
Through it all, one truth shines: God’s fidelity does not waver.
I see that same truth in my own family story.
My father’s side—Baptists, with doctors and preachers shaping lives.
My mother’s side—humble Catholics, French, Native American, Spanish, faithful for generations.
My wife’s family—another tapestry, Baptist and Catholic, Irish and English, Native American roots, with priests, preachers, doctors, even politicians.
Two families crossing paths at monumental times.
And here we are—woven together in God’s plan.
Matthew’s genealogy names Tamar, Rahab, Ruth. Outsiders. Gentiles. Women with complicated stories.
David with his sin. Exiles and returnees.
Yet from that mix comes Christ.
From that mix comes salvation for all nations.
God’s fidelity is not fragile.
It does not depend on perfect people or perfect families.
It stretches across generations, across cultures, across denominations, across every boundary we draw.
So when I hear Jacob’s prophecy and Matthew’s genealogy, I hear more than ancient names.
I hear my family’s names. I hear your family’s names.
I hear the truth that our imperfect, fascinating stories are not outside His plan.
They are part of it.
Salvation history is not just theirs—it is ours.
And Christ, the Lion of Judah, reigns at the center of it all.
Prayer
Lord, You are faithful across generations.
You weave saints and sinners into Your plan.
Bless our families, with all their beauty and imperfection.
Draw us into Christ,
and keep us in Your covenant love.
Amen.
