We Do Not Decide God’s Will

Readings 120425

I hear Christians bashing one another’s beliefs.
I hear voices declaring judgment, calling it “God’s will.”
And it hurts.

It hurts because judgment is not ours to give.
It hurts because the holy Catholic and apostolic Church was founded by Christ Himself, through His apostles and their disciples.
And yet, so many deny this gift of communion.

This morning, I heard a woman say she was “raised Catholic” but is now a newly baptized Christian. She proclaimed things she claimed Catholics never taught her—things that belong to the very heart of catechism. And again, I felt the sting of judgment where mercy should be.

But here is the truth:
God’s will is not condemnation.
God’s will is not division.
God’s will is not ours to decide.

God’s will is a plan of loving goodness, revealed in creation, salvation, and grace.
Scripture tells us: “This is the will of God, your sanctification” (1 Thess 4:3).
Jesus warns us: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father.”

The Catechism reminds us: God created us out of love, to be His sons and daughters in Christ. His will is mercy. His will is communion. His will is holiness. His will is fulfilled in Jesus, who perfectly obeyed the Father and taught us to pray, “Thy will be done.”

So what is God’s will for us today?
It is salvation.
It is sanctification.
It is mission.

It is living as a people united in Christ.
It is bearing witness through mercy, justice, and love.
It is choosing daily to trust His plan, even when hidden.
It is proclaiming the Gospel—not only in what we say, but in how we love.

God’s will is love in action.
And when we surrender to it, we discover not loss, but life—
Life built on rock.
Life that endures.
Life that leads to eternal communion with Him.

We do not decide God’s will.
We follow it.
And in following, we find freedom, holiness, and hope.

Prayer: Thy Will Be Done

Lord God,
You alone are holy, You alone are merciful.
Your will is not ours to decide, but ours to follow.

Forgive us when we judge, when we divide, when we condemn.
Teach us instead to listen, to act, to love.
Help us to build our lives on the rock of Christ,
to walk in Your will of sanctification and peace.

May Your will be our daily choice,
our steady path, our living witness.
And may we proclaim the Gospel not only in words,
but in the way we love one another.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
