When Christ Leads the Heart

Today the Church invites us to remember St. John Vianney,  

the humble Curé of Ars,  

a parish priest whose life became a quiet river of mercy.  

He spent long, aching hours in the confessional—  

sometimes sixteen hours a day—  

because he understood the hidden ache of the human heart.  

He knew that mercy is not simply an action of God;  

it is the doorway through which God enters a soul.  

St. John Vianney never preached with elegance.  

He preached with love.  

And in the economy of the Gospel,  

love is always enough.  

He is the patron saint of parish priests  

because he lived the priesthood  

not as a role to perform  

but as a gift to be poured out.  

His life became a living homily—  

simple, steady, and shaped by grace.  

And into that memory,  

the words of Jesus today speak with clarity:  

“It is not what enters the mouth that defiles,  

but what comes out.”  

The Lord reminds us that the mouth reveals the heart—  

its wounds,  

its pride,  

its tenderness,  

its truth.  

What we speak becomes the echo of what we carry.  

Then Christ warns us:  

“If a blind man leads a blind man,  

both will fall into a pit.”  

Here the Gospel turns gently toward us.  

Jesus calls us to let Him be our guide—  

not our fears,  

not our habits,  

not the noise that fills our world  

and crowds our spirit.  

St. John Vianney understood this deeply.  

He let Christ lead him  

even when he felt unworthy,  

even when the work was heavy,  

even when the crowds stretched long into the night.  

His strength was never his own;  

it was the grace that comes  

when a heart stays surrendered.  

And so the invitation becomes clear for us today:  

to let Jesus guide the heart,  

to let mercy shape our words,  

to let love be what comes forth from our mouth.  

Because when Christ leads,  

the blind begin to see,  

the weary find rest,  

and the sinner discovers home.  

Prayer

Lord Jesus, 

shape my heart in Your mercy.

Teach me to speak only what builds and heals.

Guide my steps 

so I do not walk in blindness.

Let Your light lead me 

in every choice today.

Make my life a quiet blessing

to those I serve.
