When Grace Grows in Dry Ground

Readings 091926

Hot summer burned my garden down to nothing.

Birds pecked, squirrels raided, bugs infested—

and all that spring promise faded away.

Everything died…

except one stubborn little bean plant.

It rose up in the dry, cracked bed,

stronger than anything I had tended,

growing without special care,

as if God Himself whispered life into it.

Our spiritual life is much the same.

We begin, like Adam, earthly and fragile—

but Christ, the life‑giving Spirit,

plants something heavenly within us.

The seed of faith falls where it may—

sometimes on rich soil,

sometimes on ground worn thin by life’s heat.

But grace is not limited by our condition.

Even in barren seasons,

even when prayer feels dry

and hope feels small,

God can make one seed thrive.

Those who embrace the Word

with a generous and good heart

bear fruit through perseverance.

Not overnight.

Not without struggle.

But steadily—quietly—faith grows.

So today,

walk in the presence of the Lord,

in the light of the living.

Let Christ tend the soil of your soul.

And trust that He can bring abundance

from places that look long forgotten.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,

Tend the dry soil

of my heart today.

Let Your life‑giving Spirit

rise where I feel worn thin.

Plant Your Word deep within me,

steady and strong.

Help me persevere

when the heat of life bears down.

And let my soul bear fruit

that glorifies You alone.

Amen
